What you need to know:

  • As you prepare your Easter food, you can throw in Easter eggs tradition. “Think about easy foods or snacks like meat balls, egg rolls, fried Irish potatoes and wrap them in round egg like shapes with aluminum foil. Place them in your serving bowl as snacks for your family and visitors,” Nyakato suggests.

There are various ways of celebrating Easter. Incorporating Easter Eggs in your decor is one of them. Though an ancient symbol of new life, Easter eggs are generally held as a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection, normally colourfully painted. So if you want to enjoy the long holiday with a touch of decoration to add the Easter ambiance to your home, Melab Nyakato, an interior designer, shares a few tips on how to make your own Easter eggs.

Buy paint
Nyakato says you will need different colours of paint. “Because you don’t need large quantities, you can get small tins of acrylic paint, since it also dries up very fast. If possible, you can use spray paint of different colours.

Light bulbs
To get the desired effect, these should be globe light bulbs so as to give the impression of an egg. Preferably, use bulbs that have burned out so that you do not incur expenses of buying new bulbs. Hold the bulb from the part that is usually attached into the lamp holder and paint it using a small brush or spray them with paint. Let them seat for about 20 minutes for the paint to dry. She advises that the more bulbs and different bright colours, the better.
After they dry, get a beautiful to place your bulbs.

Paper
Cut paper of different colours or plain white paper into small pieces using a pair of scissors. Put these first into the bowl and then place your coloured bulbs in the bowl, ensuring that only the coloured part is visible. You can use this as a centerpiece on your table.

Stones
These cannot be any stone, but rather beautiful round stones that almost look like eggs. Like you did with the bulbs, carefully paint the stones and leave them to dry. With stones, it may be tricky so Nyakato advises that one should first paint one side of the stone and let it dry before turning it and painting the other side.
To decorate, you can use the bowl just like in the case of the bulbs. “The difference is, you can just place the stones in the bowl or on a beautiful flat plate without using paper since they are already round and have nothing conceal.

Natural eggs
You may just decide to have your Easter eggs tradition with real eggs and just add a few touches to them. You can use dry soft grass to prepare a soft landing for the eggs in a bowl, and then have your real eggs placed there. “But again, empty egg shells can be used. When removing the contents in the eggs, don’t split it in the middle but rather, poke a small hole on the side while emptying the contents. You can go on and paint the shells, or use them the way they are, but making sure to conceal the openings.
