What should I do to get a breakthrough in job market?

I hold a degree in Civil Engineering from Ndejje University. I have been working with a local construction company for five years. However, my career is stagnant. I have tried my best but failed to grow and have no hope of growing in this job. Unfortunately, I have also failed to get a breakthrough in the job market. I really want to develop my career. What should I do? Wyclief

Dear Wyclief,
You’ve raised two issues: one, you’re finding it difficult to find another job, and secondly, you want to develop yourself for as long as you are in your current position.

The following suggestions should help you overcome both challenges. First, consider applying for scholarships to further your civil engineering education, which would increase your knowledge and skills, both of which will position you better in the job market.

In addition, consider identifying free online courses that would help you meet the same objective. Further studies in the form of a masters, diploma, certificated short courses could be used as a re-skilling opportunity, i.e. you get different skills that make you a successful candidate for non-engineering jobs or projects.

Secondly, you may want to grow your networks or use the ones you have which give you access to career growth opportunities. Call them up, let them know about your willingness to participate in projects. I would consider doing this pro-bono in the first instance and then certainly at fee once you have three to four successful projects under your belt.

Also get onto professional platforms like LinkedIn where you can showcase your skills and experience. You will have access to jobs that are advertised on this platform. Lastly, consider sharing your CV with recruitment agencies that have further and larger recruitment reach than you.
