Exploring caretaking as a profession

Care. The elderly and sick need professional caretakers.

What you need to know:

  • Some of the difficult situations, Basoga says, include feeding a patient, timely drug administration for patients and proper dosage as well as bed bath, among other services.

Today, many people spend most of their time working as a requirement from their employers and or business enterprises. This creates no room for them to fully take care of their loved ones in their homes with different ailments and disabilities.
As a result of the need to take care of their people who may be elderly, sick and disabled, they are forced to abandon or reduce their working pattern, which affects their income or even losing their jobs and businesses.

Reports show that many of the people have gone ahead to solicit and employ their relatives who are less committed to take care of the vulnerable persons in their homes and hospitals to handle situations that need trained personnel.
But Edwin Basoga, a social worker, explains that effective caring of a loved one requires a professional nurse because getting a relative to handle certain situations of a patient can be disgusting.

The necessity
Some of the difficult situations, Basoga says, include feeding a patient, timely drug administration for patients and proper dosage as well as bed bath, among other services.
“There are some many people who need this service because you find someone has a patient or an elderly person but also have to work at the same time. We are saying that a nurse can relieve you from patient caring as you go to work and raise income,” says Basoga.
With the high employment rate, youth could explore caretaking as professional. Basoga says has set up Trahas Bedside Care Uganda Limited, a company that will be offering home care treatment and bedside care services to Ugandans in a move that will revolutionise the country’s heath system.

According to Basoga, there is a gap that needs to be met to help employees get relieved from their sick and elderly persons and yet they are supposed to meet daily expenses.
“We provide you with a nurse based on the need and someone can be able to continue with their routine duties whether in the hospitals or at home instead of incurring hue budgets and suffering stress,” he says, underscoring that some kind of care that can only be provided by a profession like patients in deplorable state.

“Relatives can get tired and disgusted but a trained personnel can handle people in any conditions appropriately especially the elderly who need special care and attention like singing, physio-therapies and other demands,” says Basoga, adding that his firm has developed a data base of suitable nurses to help people save and sustain their jobs and careers throughout the country.
He says: “We also have job opportunities for nurses because this is a demand driven service in the country and yet it is still new.”

The big difference
“A professional nurse is able to watch and monitor important signs and changes of a patient especially for those who are hypertensive and the diabetic to ensure their safety. This can help to reduce sudden deaths because they are equipped,” says Basoga.
On the side of post-natal care, Basoga explains that nurses are able to ensure health and safety of mothers especially those who undergo Caesarean Section to help them recover from operation as well as taking good care of the child at infancy.
