Applying for emergency leave is usually considered hard for any employer but a supervisor who values productivity of his/her organisation understands that it is essential for an employee in distress to take care of an emergency and fully be dedicated at work.
However this kind of leave is exceptional since it is not planned in advance and might lead to disruptions at the workplace.
Review your company policy to confirm your entitled compassionate leave days. If they are less or none, it might be necessary for you to find out if your employer can “loan” you some days that will be accrued in the near future.
Although some companies require you to work for a certain amount of time before you begin to accrue days off while others are flexible as long as you’re within the leave entitlement.
Schedule a face to face meeting with your supervisor and share enough details as soon as possible. You may if possible provide documentation such as a doctor’s note, the anticipated duration of the leave etc. This request should thereafter be put in writing, an email should suffice.
Remember this should be a request and not a demand. You should also avoid stating your time off as a done deal prior to getting approval from your supervisor.
