How can I perform better at job interviews?

Caroline Mboijana

After an interview with a recruitment agency, I was told that I am not enthusiastic enough about my past achievements. I was told to speak highly of myself in order to impress potential employers. Should I now resort to exaggerated self-praise and ego-stroking just to get a job? – Lena.

Hi Lena,
Having the feedback gives you an opportunity to improve your interviewing performance. Talking about one’s achievements can sometimes be difficult for non-assuming or modest people. My advice is not to exaggerate what you’ve accomplished, but rather focus on the outcome and impact of your achievements.

Many interviewees talk about their achievements from an activity-based perspective without stating how their achievements have added value to the people or organisation that they’ve worked with. You’ll need to present your achievements from an outcome and impact perspective. This requires you to present the link between what you did and the impact it had on the organisation, team or individuals you’ve worked with.

This can be accomplished by telling a short story highlighting what you did but more importantly describing the impact. Your impact could be described as having a financial, behavioural or attitude change impact. If you have evidence such as figures that indicate an increase in sales as a result of your intervention, this must be shared with the panel. If you’ve done what you say you’ve done your tone, body language and manner of the story telling will automatically demonstrate enthusiasm and passion.

Take time to think through the experiences you’re going to share with the interviewing panel. Select stories/ experiences that speak directly to the role that you’ve applied for.
