Is it right to enrol for a course in a different field?

Caroline Mboijana

Is it okay to enrol on a different course in a different field of your interest? I am a writer but just want to be equipped with knowledge in a short course on social behavioural change communication and sign language. Scot

Dear Scot,
It is certainly acceptable to enrol for courses in areas that interest you.
Before you enrol, my advice would be to first know why you want to attend the course and more importantly how you are going to use the newly acquired knowledge.
Having certificates for courses attended and completed, are not of any add value unless you can prove your ability to apply the knowledge.

Fundamentally the validation of your abilities through effective application of knowledge guarantees success at 2 levels; 1) for yourself, reaffirming self-achievement, and 2) current or potential employers, in the event your new knowledge will result in promotion and or position you as a suitable candidate in the event you’re job hunting.
Other aspects you’ll need to take into consideration are the costs, both financial and time.
If you’re employed, make sure you have the time and commitment to study and continue performing in your current role.

Your ambition to gain knowledge should not come at the cost of negatively affecting your performance.
I further suggest, once you’ve completed or during the course, you consider volunteering or taking on an internship with organisations so that you can get the required exposure to prove your ability to perform as well as continually learn. Good Luck
