My boss is not an objective mediator

Alice Nankya L. Nsibuka

My boss is annoying and making it difficult for me to do my job in peace. ‘Boss from hell’ is a perfect description. How does one handle an unprofessional boss in an environment where superiors are not objective in mediations? Lyn

Dear Lyn,
A manager who fails to act in a professional way can damage employee morale, hinder performance and create unnecessary stress. Usually the best option is to seek employment elsewhere though this isn’t always possible. Thus it is vital to identify the type of supervisor you are working with and strategize on how to neutralise their behaviour.

Micromanagers make subordinates feel as if they are under constant surveillance, pay too much attention to small details which makes employees feel discouraged and frustrated. This kind of supervisor is naturally drawn to employees who produce work the way they envision. So ask specific questions about your assignments and look for trends in your supervisor’s feedback.

Sometimes a supervisor may have subordinates that have been at the company a lot longer and have information and skills that he/she lacks. In this case, it is important to swallow your pride and share your experience and knowledge, without rubbing it in their face.
Some supervisors engage in office gossip and choose favourites among their subordinates which creates division among employees. Remember you have direct control over your performance, so put all the focus on your job.

Respectfully and carefully confront your supervisor and share your concerns as soon as you can. If the direct approach fails consult with your human resource manager. Never gossip about your supervisor with other colleagues.
