My workmates are younger than me. How do I blend in?

What you need to know:

Much as it is helpful to understand each generation needs, remember we are all individuals and being born in a certain age demographic does not guarantee anything

I am 43-years-old and work for a company I have been at for the last 12 years. Most of my colleagues left and the place has mostly new and younger employees. I don’t fit in anymore because of the age difference with most of them. How do I blend in since I am not yet ready to leave? Emma

Dear Emma,
Most organisations today have a multi-generational workforce, with employees ranging from baby boomers (born 1946-1964) approaching retirement to generation Z’ers (born 1995-2015) the latest entrants into the job market and millennials/Generation Y (born 1981-2000).Generally all generations have their own set of preferences, working style and perspectives which presents an opportunity for sharing knowledge and experience.
However there is also potential for conflict since different generations might struggle to understand each other’s values and working styles. Respect and acceptance are vital. Just as younger generations need to respect older employees’ seniority and experience, it is also important for the older ones to adjust and respect their potential and talents.
Successful multi-generational teams identify value and build on each other’s skills and experiences. You could opt for reverse mentoring where you benefit from the skills and perspectives of your millennial colleagues while they also learn from your institutional knowledge and experience.
Much as it is helpful to understand each generation needs, remember we are all individuals and being born in a certain age demographic does not guarantee anything. In fact, many younger workers don’t even notice that someone is older especially if they are energetic and passionate about issues at work. Try to avoid stereotypes and appreciate mutual understanding and teamwork.
