Will I get a job in a field I am passionate about?

What you need to know:

  • You shouldn’t worry about getting a job in the dream field you are passionate about. When you graduate, try out your passion as a hobby. Many people have hobbies but they don’t initially earn from them.

I am studying a course in an area I am passionate about though it is very different from the field I am working in. I am worried about getting a job in this dream field, could I be wasting time? What should I do? Charlotte

Dear Charlotte,
Many people have regrettably lived out their lives as victims of poor career guidance, when they ended up with the only available job opportunities that were not in tandem with their passions or dream careers. The problem with this situation is that you find many people burnt out because they have spent their productive lives in jobs which didn’t resonate at all with their purposes in life.
I have written before on this page that your passion is that one job, career or activity that you so much love doing that you can actually do it for free. When you derive immense satisfaction in doing your dream activity or job, you actually look the part and if you are consistent, money will simply follow and you will find yourself being paid to do what you love doing. Work actually becomes paid for play!
You shouldn’t worry about getting a job in the dream field you are passionate about.
Follow through your course to completion and when you graduate, try out your passion as a hobby. Many people have hobbies but they don’t initially earn from them. They do them because they are passionate about them.
You will realise with time that the hobby you are so passionate about can actually start earning you money. Remember money follows passion. Because you become alive, fully engaged and genuinely happy in your hobby, you will consequently become highly productive and end up being successful and wealthy.
