Fashionista: A new job title released

What you need to know:

  • When I did more research about this new “job title”, it confirmed how shaken our standards have become. As a fashionista, you must wake up every morning and only look beautiful, wear make-up, nice clothing, go shopping, hopping in and out of restaurants with your friends, getting free designer jewellery and accessories and above all, having lots of fans who love to take photos with you. who does not like such a job!

Back in the good old days, parents used to pride themselves with the achievement of their children in the fields of arts and sciences. Children would grow up wishing to become doctors, teachers and architects.

Well, it seems that social media is reshaping even these values. As a culinary fan, I like to follow some chefs on Instagram, in search of new recipes and ideas. One such chef is a medical doctor who decided to become a chef instead of practising medicine.

The interesting part is that he is not working in a five-star restaurant as such, rather, he presents some shows on an unknown TV channel. He conducts private cooking lessons and of course, posts his daily activities online, and it seems this is where the money is generated.

With thousands of followers, companies ask him to include advertisements on his post for their products and services, and the chef has no problem with that because at the end of the day, he is paid cash and in kind for doing so. The most interesting part is that he also gets catering orders and while preparing them, he posts online, hence hitting two birds with one stone.

The other day, I was chatting with a 10-year-old girl, who is a handful when it comes to attitude. I asked her what interests her when grown up, without hesitation, she said I want to be a fashionista on social media. This reply hit me like thunder. I knew there were such people on social media, but I did not realise that it is now considered as a profession that young ones aspire to do.

The young lady then stated her idol and mentioned that she and her mother follow her on Instagram. It then became clear to me who is her role model in her daily life.
It is disturbing that this addiction to social media, is not only ruining the present, it will have grave influence on the future.
