Travelling becomes a costly affair

What you need to know:

  • Travelling by air has become a costly affair, not only for the pocket, but for the environment too, has this reduced the number of travellers? I do not think so.

Kuwait is the country of my birth, and I still have family and friends who reside there, so I often find my way searching online for cheap tickets to travel there, for one reason or another.
A few days ago, I had an urgent matter to attend to and the best price, this time was offered by Kuwait Airways. When I arrived in Kuwait, I was surprised how the old airport, that was not in a good shape, was now new and shiny. Little did I know that I was not in the old airport and that this was altogether a new airport, dedicated to Kuwait Airways.

I found my way around the visa section and all went well. Luckily, my brother who picked me up noticed that I was to be picked up from this terminal and not the old one. When I got in the car, I asked him, so, how many airports are there now in this tiny country? He said four!
Of course, all these are almost next to each other and using one runway, with three buildings dedicated to a specific airline and one for all the other airlines. The first thing that crossed my mind was, what if something happens to this runway, or if it needs maintenance and upkeep, does that mean four airports come to a standstill?

This scenario is not far from reality, with Dubai airport runways under renovation, and with all the preparations and planning, travelling to Dubai has become a bit of a challenge these days, until all goes back to normal, it’s the bitter pill that will cure.
Travelling by air has become a costly affair, not only for the pocket, but for the environment too, has this reduced the number of travellers? I do not think so. These days, you can find a cheap ticket that becomes expensive when all the taxes and levies imposed by airlines and airports are added to the original price. Many budget airlines have left the market and others are to follow.

Some airlines are heavily subsidised by their countries, otherwise they cannot survive the high costs of running their operations. Food, water and good seats are now sold onboard some airlines, desperation is manifested in very ugly ways, such as asking for a glass of water on board an airline such as “Pegasus” and being told that you must buy it!
