I used my first salary to buy shoes - Viboyo

What you need to know:

The hustle. Moses Nsubuga, also known as Viboyo is a Ugandan artiste/rapper behind songs Nyumbani alongside Goodlyf, Love Me Love Me, Zzina, Banyilila and the annual end of year wrap up songs. He also doubles as a film producer at Swangz Avenue. Isaac Ssejjombwe talked to him about life.

First thing you do when you wake up.
It’s funny but the first thing I do when I wake up is reach for my phone to read at least one verse of the Holy Quran. Then I go on to check emails, social media, jump out of bed, brush my teeth, head to the gym for two hours, then return, take a shower and head to work.

First thing you do when you get to work.
Check my to-do-list, look for what is urgent and what can wait and then start off my day.

Earliest childhood memory.
I have many but the one that stands out involves me and my brother trekking from Abayita Ababiri to Entebbe Airport without telling anyone at home. We spent the whole day there, looking at people and planes taking off.

First best friend
A guy called Mulindwa in primary. We used to do everything together at school and at home. I remember one day he caught a monkey and reared it as a pet.

First kiss
I won’t mention the name of the person because she’s happily married now but it was in Senior Two at Mengo SSS. We kissed behind the toilet and strange things happened to my body afterwards.

First childhood hero
My late brother George Idudu who was a deejay. I learnt a lot from him. He was a cool guy, always smart with a French cut, inspired my music career and in fact he’s a father to one of the artiste managers at Swangz Avenue. I looked up to him in so many ways.

First girlfriend
She was called Nora. I got her while I was in Senior Three at Nakasero. Although our relationship was on and off, it lasted for four years. I haven’t seen her in a while but we used to communicate on social media.

First book you read..
The Bible. Apart from the nursery books and text books, the Bible was the first book I read with interest. Those stories were interesting.

First job.
I used to help my mother sell sacks in my primary seven vacation.

First salary.
It was from music. If I remember correctly, a certain deejay called Jim took us for a gig and paid us Shs5,000. By then getting paid to sing was nearly impossible. I think it was in 1998 or 1999. I used the money to buy shoes.

Current job.
I’m a film producer at Swangz Avenue. I do film production, I fix stuff for the team. So I basically make things happen.

What do you like about your job?
The experience. It’s adventurous; get to see a lot of people from different walks of life, different backgrounds and I learn more. It’s not a desk job that you have to do the same things every day. Every job comes with a challenge.

What don’t you like about it?
The late nights, meeting the targets and sometimes people are annoying.

Most memorable experience…
The first time I heard myself sing. The first time I heard my voice, it is one thing you can never get used to. It was a song called 'Bakyala Baffel and on Kid Fox’s album. He let me feature four of my songs on his 12-track album.

Best advice.
Stay grounded, stay clean, avoid wrong friends and people who don’t add any value to your life, know what you want and how to get it. It’s a collection of ideas from different people I’ve grown up with, work with and those who have shaped me.

Biggest regret in life.
Usually girls! There are some people I got involved with and at the end of the day it was not worth it. I regret why I even wasted my precious time with them.
