Nyamityobora in Uganda Cup distraction

KAMPALA. Nyamityobora completed the first round of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League occupying the third and final relegation spot on the 16-team log with a paltry nine points from 15 games.
They would consequently have been expected to view the Stanbic Uganda Cup as a destruction in their bid to focus on trying to beat the drop.
But ever the optimist, Nyamityobora coach Asaph Mwebaze is looking at his side’s Uganda Cup game against Proline this evening in positive light.
“It is not a distraction. It gives us game time for us to prepare for the league,” Mwebaze reasoned when sounded out about the importance of the fixture.
In that context Mwebaza and Nyamityobora perhaps need the game more than any other topflight league club.
Apart from the their precarious situation on the table, Mwebaze has been forced to field players from the club’s junior team after they parted ways with up to nine first team players for various reasons.
He has been in charge of eight games since replacing James Odoch as head coach picking five points from seven league games, an improvement from the four accumulated after the opening eight games.
The sequence also includes a 3-1 win over third division side Eastlands that ensured progression from the round-of-64 stage.
They have made three signings so far with midfielder Fredrick Mayindi inline to make his debut today.
Forward Peter Mutebi and national under-20 goalkeeper Dennis Otim are meanwhile not eligible to feature against a Proline team that will fancy their chances of an upset.
The latter come into this game with a two-point lead at the top of the Rwenzori Group in the halfway point of the second tier Big League as they seek an immediate return to the top league.
The Shafik Bisaso coached side have accumulated 23 points from 10 games and average 2.5 goals thus far.
