What you need to know:

  • In the best coaches’ category, KCCA gaffer Mike Mutebi is expected to shove aside Police’s Abdallah Mubiru and former Proline coach Shafiq Bisaso to win his fourth consecutive gong.

In the previous four editions of the Airtel Fufa awards, the winner has been a debated choice, but not this time at least.

As the final three contenders for the Airtel Fufa Male Player of the Year Award – Bright Anukani, Mustafa Kizza and Allan Okello – face off this evening at Speke Resort Munyonyo, each may pass as a deserved winner – yet the identity of the eventual victor is anything but resolved yet.

The first facet of the award and prize car battle will have Okello encountering Kizza in a ‘brotherly’ battle. For everything Okello won with KCCA, Kizza has too - and with more impressive stats over 13 assists and five goals as KCCA won the league, Fufa Super Cup and with a great contribution in the Cecafa triumph, Kizza has what it takes to push Okello, the perceived popular choice.

Proline playmaker Anukani is not there simply to make up the numbers, and he has a genuine chance if his Caf Confederations Cup, Uganda Cup and Fufa Big League achievements are not to be taken lightly.

All said, Okello, who narrowly lost out to Moses Waiswa last year and is finding his feet with the national team, is in the driving seat as the two awards (Buzz Teens best player and Football 256 Awards) collected thus far can attest.

Nalukenge favourite
For captaining Uganda - girls’ national team to winning the Cosafa Championship, emerging the top scorer with 18 goals and helping Kawempe Muslim to win both the national and East Africa Secondary Schools championship, Juliet Nalukenge stands the highest chances of winning the Female best player accolade ahead of Fauzia Najjemba and former winner Hasfa Nassuna.
