Today’s match between hosts Proline and SC Villa at Lugogo brings together two happy faces - at least going by their respective previous results.
A 3-1 commanding dismissal of Mbarara City and 1-0 win over Onduparaka saw both Villa and Proline claim their first maximum points of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) season, and they face off all looking to build on.
“Yes the win gives us much confidence and I’m sure we are going to be even much better,” said Villa coach Edward Kaziba.
Kaziba knows Proline, Uganda’s Caf Confederation Cup representatives, can be dangerous on their day, and will approach them with respect.
“Good enough,” said Kaziba, “I watched them play Mbarara. They are good as a team but I think we are better.”
Mbarara City won that one 3-0 and Villa, who lost their opener to Kyetume, put Kaziba’s notes to good use by beating the Ankole Lions 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Kaziba thinks the same magic could work against Proline.
But Proline themselves have since picked up the pieces to beat Onduparaka. And their coach, Matia Lule, is equally positive.
“And it’s not only about the win over Onduparaka,” explained Lule, “We want it to carry on. This is marathon whereby we have to fight the same against to all teams in the league.”
David Owori, Emmanuel Kalyowa and Ambrose Kirya scored Villa’s goals on Wednesday, while Edrisa Lubega’s free kick punished Onduparaka.
Bashir Mutanda created Kirya’s goal but is yet to open his account for the season himself. But he believes if they keep “attacking and defending the way we did against Mbarara, we can go far.
“We are pushing so hard. And coaches said that it’s not enough; that we have to get minimum of 25 points in first round.” Villa come into the third game with three points, same as Proline. At Wankulukuku, Express coach George Ssimwogerere is calling on home fans to exercise more patience as he builds a project he believes will benefit the club for many years to come.
“I’m not Jesus that I can see what has not yet happened,” Sswimwogerere told his club website, “I see what is present. We are building a good team that what I’m trying to do.”
The Red Eagles welcome Onduparaka looking for their first win having lost and drawn their opening two matches.
