This week SC Villa confirmed Douglas Bamweyana as the club’s new head coach following the departure of Moses Basena.
The move caught many in football circles by surprise considering the coach’s relative lack of experience in league football, let alone coaching at Uganda’s most successful league side.
Bamweyana’s topflight experience as a coach reads W-3, D-1, L-4 record for the eight games he handled Express in a stint that started with their third league game last season.
The 2016/2017 season also saw him involved in Proline’s opening six second round league games (W-3, D-2, L-1 while he was Express assistant coach for the opening seven league games W-4, D-2, L-1 of the same campaign.
Beyond the statistics however, Villa, who have won the league title a record 16 times, seem to have acquired a coach with the potential to match their ambitions.
The club expects a new administration in place at the start of the year with this state and results thus far dictating that there will be no pressure for the league title this season.
This could all play into the hands of the 37 year old Bamweyana who is part of a new breed of Ugandan coaches that emphasize the importance of structures.
“His way of doing things requires time. But if he is trusted by Villa then he will succeed,” former Express captain Steven Luswata who played under him during his two stints at Express
Bamweyana, who holds a Caf A football coaching license also holds an FA Level 2 coaching license from Leicestershire – UK describes himself as excellent tactician yet very keen on entertaining Football with an attention to detail and being results-driven.
That was evidenced during his five years as head coach of the Makerere University team between 2012-2017 where he had a W-63, D-13, L-7 record.
“He gives a lot of freedom to players. He is a very good coach who mostly lets his players to play their game,” added Vipers captain Taddeo Lwanga who played under him from his time at the university.

Short playing career
The former head of department of Sports Science at Makerere University also holds a Master of Science in Sports Biomechanics.
His short football playing career as an attacking central midifelder saw him feature at St. Henry’s College Kitovu (‘95-’98), and University (Makerere University ‘01-’04).
He was reportedly also offered a professional contract with SC Villa in 2001/2 under Micho & Basena which he declined to pursue a university degree, a decision he does not regret.
On the current SC Villa squad Bamweyana expressed confidence but turning around the club’s fortunes that has seen them collect a miserly four points from their opening four games. “There is quality in the players but what we need to work on is how to control games with or without the ball, when in the lead or not,” he said.
He got off to a winning start as Villa coach as they edged fellow strugglers Nyamityobora 1-0 at Wankulukuku last weekend courtesy of a Bashir Mutanda.
The forward along with Albert Mugisa have been the few shining lights at the club in their troubled start. The result marked their first win in the opening nine games this season but indicated how much work Bamweyana has on his hands.
“I am not correcting any mistakes because my approach is different. I’m imparting a different philosophy and in the first half we showed a few glimpses of that. But it will take time,” Bamweyana said after the game.
His side has a relatively easy fixture list coming up with a game against traditional rivals Express expected to pose the biggest challenge.
They faced off with fourth from bottom Maroons in a game that ended in a 1-1 stalemate on Thursday and they travel to Ndejje that is hovering just above the relegation places on Tuesday before an away fixture against bottom side Paidha Black Angels at the end of the year.
