Opposition Forum for Democratic Change legislator and former MP for Malacha Constituency, Mr Alex Onzima has crossed to the ruling NRM party. According to a press release from State House, Mr Onzima while at the inauguration of the new district of Maracha on Friday made the pronouncement before President Museveni who was the chief guest.
Maracha was carved out of Arua District. According to yesterday’s press release, Mr Onzima crossed over with several FDC supporters.
“He said he abandoned FDC because of the internal wrangles and weaknesses in opposition parties. He said the wise leadership and manner in which the NRM under President Museveni is managing the affairs of the country is exemplary,” reads the release sent to Daily Monitor.
Mr Onzima has represented Maracha constituency for the last 14 years and is the longest serving MP from West Nile. “How can you fight for so many years, a party that is growing from strength to strength? I strongly believe that you are the only person who can maintain the peace you have created and you can sustain it. I pray to God to give you health and we shall rally behind you,” he reportedly declared amid cheers from the crowd.
President Museveni welcomed Mr Onzima to NRM. “I’m very glad to welcome Hon Alex Onzima and all his supporters to the Movement. You heard the reasons he gave for joining the movement and they are very good reasons. I also welcome those members of other parties to the movement,” the NRM Chairman said.
The MP was not available for comment yesterday as he did not respond to several calls by this newspaper.
On the Prosperity for All programme, the President encouraged the people of West Nile to exploit the National Agricultural Advisory Services programme to learn modern farming methods and eradicate poverty.
