10 shortlisted for tourism board top positions

CEO job. Mr Andrew Seguya, CEO post. Ms Lilly Ajarova, Deputy CEO post. Mr Simon Kasyate

Kampala. Ten people have been shortlisted for Uganda Tourism Board (UTB)’s top jobs, Daily Monitor has learnt.
In a December 14 letter signed by Dr Godfrey Mbabazi, the secretary of Public Service Commission, three candidates have been invited for oral interviews today to replace current chief executive officer Stephen Asiimwe, who reportedly expressed no interest in renewing his contract.
“The following applicants Seguya Andrew Ggunga, Ajarova Lilly and Ochieng Bradford are invited for oral interviews,” Dr Mbabazi’s letter reads in part .
Dr Seguya is the former Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) executive director, who was replaced in March by Mr Sam Mwandha.
Ms Ajarova is the current executive director of Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust.
The sanctuary prioritises protection of chimpanzees as a species in the wild, conservation, environmental education as well as creating awareness on environmental issues.
Mr Ochieng is the director of corporate affairs at Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority.
He is responsible for overseeing the implementation and providing strategic and technical leadership (monitoring, evaluation, ICT, strategic management and partnership, communication, and risk management).
Efforts to get a comment from Mr Asiimwe on why he did not seek renewal of his contract were futile as he did not respond to our repeated calls.
Nevertheless, sources said he was reportedly advised not to reply because he had not met UTB’s objectives during his tenure while others claimed he tendered in his resignation months back because he is going for further studies abroad.
Mr Asiimwe was appointed UTB executive director in 2014 by late Tourism minister Maria Mutagamba, replacing Mr Cuthbert Baguma.
Mr Asiimwe, who had been the managing director and editor-in-chief of the East African Business Week newspaper, was appointed alongside Mr John Ssempebwa as his deputy.
