60 passengers cheat death as Mbarara-bound bus overturns

KALUNGU- At least 69 passengers have  cheated death  after a bus they were travelling in overturned near Lukaya Weigh Bridge on Masaka -Kampala highway.

The incident occurred at about 10am.All the 69 passengers who were on bond escaped unhurt.

 Terrified passengers broke windows to escape. The bus was travelling from Kampala to Mbarara.

  According to witnesses, the bus which was moving at a normal speed would have skidded off the highway due to a wet surface following a morning downpour.

“The driver was not speeding since we were entering a busy town [Lukaya], but all of a sudden, we saw the bus overturning and what followed are terrified screams of mainly female passengers on board. Some called on Jesus for divine intervention,” Mr Chris Kasasira, a survivor said.

 Another survivor, Ms Christine Asiimwe, said: “I was asleep and only woke up seeing people falling on me.”

 Both the driver and conductor took off immediately after the accident.

 The ill -fated bus Reg. No. UAY 0975 belongs to Perfect Coaches Company.

Southern Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Lameck Kigozi, said they are investigating what could have caused the accident.

“We have asked the proprietors of the bus company to dispatch another bus so that passengers can continue with their journey,” he said.

Police have towed the bus to Lukaya Police Station.
