KAMPALA. At least 7,000 students will graduate at Kyambogo University today with management also allowing even those who have not paid full tuition fees to graduate.

The phased three-day graduation starts today at the university campus in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
The vice chancellor, Prof Elly Katunguka, yesterday told journalists that unlike the previous years where tuition defaulters were not allowed to graduate, the university has this time round decided to consider only academic requirements as opposed to finance considerations.

Prof Katunguka, however, said much as the fees defaulting students will be allowed to graduate, they will not receive their academic transcripts and certificates until they clear the outstanding balance.
“This time, we have said students will graduate on the basis of having completed academic requirements. If a student has passed all the prescribed courses, he or she will graduate. There are students who still owe the university money but we are going to give them the chance of graduating and clear their dues later,” Prof Katunguka said on Monday.

A total of 7,304 students are set to graduate in various disciplines with 4,139 of them being male and 3,165 female. The university expects to add more 500 students on the list.

Prof Katunguka said this is the highest number the university is graduating on their 14th ceremony, up from 7,078 and 6,479 in 2017 and 2016.

He revealed that the university will introduce centralised examination marking to reduce delays in submission of students marks. Prof Katunguka assured students that they will get their marks between one and two months.
“We are going to reinstate central marking which had failed. We are going to ensure that each faculty collects students’ scripts in one central room for marking. We are optimistic that this will reduce the time of releasing student’s marks, unlike in the previous where they have been taking over six months marking exams,” Prof Katunguka said.

Meanwhile, President Museveni has reappointed Prof John Ssebuwufu as Kyambogo University chancellor and is slated to preside over today’s graduation.
