Witnesses: Bagyenda confessed killing lover

Relatives of the slain girlfriend to pharmacist Brian Bagyenda have told court that he confessed to them on how he killed her.
The trial of Bagyenda started in the High Court yesterday on charges of murdering his 22-year-old girlfriend Enid Twijukye, who was a student of International Relations at Ndejje University, in January 2016.

Bagyenda is jointly charged with two others, Innocent Bainomugisha (24), a cleaner and Vincent Rwahwire (28), a casual worker.
Three relatives of the deceased testified before Justice Moses Kazibwe that Bagyenda confessed to them about the murder.
Ms Evas Turigye, the deceased’s sister, and her husband, Mr David Obluk, told court that when they went to Kira Police Station to record their statements, they asked to first have a word with Bagyenda, which police accepted.

They said when Bagyenda approached them under the guard of three detectives, he looked at the deceased’s elder brother Timothy Taremwa and said: “I am sorry, please forgive me.”
Asked whether he told them why he committed the crime, Ms Turigye said Bagyenda said: “I have been tracking Enid’s phone and I found out she had another boyfriend. I bought her milk and porridge which she took and thereafter she told me our relationship was coming to an end while she was leaving.”

“I called my two shamba boys to hold her alleging that she had stolen my Shs4 million. Thereafter, I ran to a shop and bought sellotape, which I put around her mouth. Enid was held as I pulled down the curtains and played loud music to ‘prevent noise from moving out’. I then suffocated her to death with a pillow,” the witness quoted Bagyenda to have said.
The witnesses further said Bagyenda’s plan was to bury the deceased at his home village in Kalangala District, but his two boys refused to assist him. He decided to dump the body in Seeta, Mukono District.
The deceased’s mother, Ms Esther Mirembe, told court that she did not know about Bagyenda until he called for her and the husband to come at police where he was detained after his arrest to apologise over the killing, which he did not do because his lawyer stopped him from talking to anyone again.

When the defence lawyer asked Ms Mirembe whether her deceased daughter had informed her about a patient (Bagyenda) she often visited at Butabika Hospital, she said no.
Bagyenda’s trial comes after he failed to reach a plea bargain with the prosecution which has now lined up 18 witnesses to testify against him and his co-accused.
The case has been adjourned to December 19 and December 20.

Background
Prosecution states that on January 4, 2016 at Njobe Road in Nakawa Division, Kampala, Bagyenda and his two accomplices murdered Twijukye.
