Brother pursuing his sister’s killers found dead

Police are probing the murder of a man whose body was found dumped by the roadside in Nsangi, Wakiso District, days after he had reportedly vowed to hunt for the suspect in his sister’s murder.

Huzayiru Mawanda, who was closely following up the killing of his sister, Zulaika Nalubega, was discovered by Nsangi police on Monday morning. His body had deep cuts and he is suspected to have been hacked with machetes.

Nalubega was killed on October 7 inside her matrimonial home in Nsaggu village, Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District. She was allegedly killed by her husband, Mr Qurish Lukandwa, after the former accused the latter of having an affair with their maid. Mr Lukandwa is still at large.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said there were no signs of resistance at the crime scene pointing to a possibility that Mawanda was killed in a different place but dumped in a place near his Nabbingo home for unknown reasons.

“He had deep cuts on the body. He had no identification documents but he was taken to Mulago mortuary where the relatives successfully identified it. Unfortunately, relatives haven’t returned statements with our police in Nsangi,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

Mr Owoyesigyire said they were investigating the motive of Mawanda’s murder and urged relatives to record statements with Nsangi police to help in ongoing investigations.

“We know the key suspect in Nalubega’s murder and he is still in hiding. We are sure we shall get him any time. However, we are yet to understand whether the Nalubega and Mawanda murders are connected,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

Mawanda was a renowned boda-boda rider in Nabbingo. His friends have reportedly told police that he was called by a person who seemed to be his close friend or relative when he was watching a football match between Uganda Cranes and Cape Verde on Saturday at Namboole Stadium.

The deceased is said to have rushed to meet the person who had reportedly booked him on the phone during the start of second half. Mawanda’s wife called his phone in the wee hours of Sunday morning but she was not going through. She then alerted her in-laws who joined the hunt for Mawanda until they decided to crosscheck with Mulago mortuary.

Mr Owoyesigyire said police was welcoming all leads to establish Mawanda’s killers. When asked to explain the version that Mawanda was called by his close friend for a job, Mr Owoyesigyire said that would be proved only when they recover the deceased’s telephone, suspected to have been taken by his killers.

Nalubega and Mawanda were children of Hajji Abbas Lubega, a resident of Kabale Butiti in Kyotera District. Mawanda becomes the third child of Hajji Lubega to die in similar manner this year.
