CSOs call for open data governance

Monday September 17 2012

Uganda needs to operationalise laws and policies that promote free flow of information from government to the public to enhance democracy and transformation of society, experts in development and good governance have said.

Mr Charles Lwanga-Ntale, the African Regional Director at Development Initiatives, said free flow of information and data will enhance meaningful participation of citizens in democratic processes, promote economic growth, reduce corruption and eliminate poverty.

Mr Lwanga-Ntale, while addressing the Open Development Stakeholders workshop in Kampala last week, said while the legal process of free information flow has advanced in the country, practically this is not working yet as there is slow movement in government institutions especially in the executive and amongst key stakeholders.
