Church leader, tycoon kidnapped, murdered

Police in Ntungamo District are investigating two separate incidents where a local businessman and a religious leader were kidnapped and later murdered on Monday.
Enos Kabonera, a local businessman in Rubaare Town and the head of Laity at Rubaare Church of Uganda Archdeaconry in South Ankole Diocese was kidnapped from his residence in Rubaare Town at around 7:30pm by people who might have been known to him.

Witnesses said they saw Kabonera talk to the assailants before boarding their vehicle but he was later strangled. His body was recovered in Nyakisa Village in Ntungamo Sub-county yesterday.
In the second incident, three armed robbers attacked KK traders wholesale and retail shop in Ntungamo Town and shot the shop owners before fleeing with money.
The Ntungamo District Police Commander, Mr Damian Katwesiime, confirmed the two incidents.

“We are investigating the two incidents that happened almost concurrently but appear rather different. We have some leads and we hope we shall come to the right conclusion,” Mr Katwesiime said. He said one suspect had been arrested.
Mr Kabonero has been one of the richest businessmen in Rubaare Town with at least 10 buildings and livestock farms with more than 20,000 head of cattle.
In the robbery incident, three gunmen riding motorcycles attacked KK Traders shop run by twin brothers at around 8:30pm. They ordered the customers and shop attendants to lie down.
The robbers fled with all the money estimated at about Shs4 million.

There have been five other murders in the district since the month began, according to police sources.

The Ntungamo municipality mayor, Mr Jacob Kafureeka, said the municipal council will prioritise installation of security cameras in the town next financial year to curb crime.
Ntungamo was ranked fouth in crime in the country in the 2018 crime report, two places better than the 2017 ranking when it was second. However, it was ranked highest in murder in 2018.
