Construction of 1,000 houses for former residents of Naguru and Nakawa housing estates has started, with the first 188 units expected to be ready by end of the year, the project contractor said on Friday.
The Naguru-Nakawa Satellite City Development is an ultramodern satellite town with mixed commercial and residential developments. It is a partnership between Opecprime Properties Uganda Limited (OPUL), a UK subsidiary firm of Comer Homes Group and the government of Uganda.
“The first phase of the Comer Apartments, the more than 1,000 one to four bedroom apartments, has commenced. We have contracted Roko Construction Company Ltd to do the job since it has the experience and expertise in the construction industry. By the end of December 2015, January or at most March 2016, we should have the first units ready to be occupied by former residents,” Mr Michael Mulcahy, lawyer for Comer Homes Group, said.
Addressing journalists while handing over the site to Roko, Mr Mulcahy said Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has already approved the structural drawings for the first units.
When asked about the amount Roko is to earn, he declined to answer saying it is a matter of company confidentiality.
When complete, the Naguru-Nakawa Satellite City is to have apartments, office blocks, hotels, retail spaces, institutions and places of worship.
According to a press release issued at the function, the apartments will have modern features and finishes such as glass panel balconies, options for open plan kitchens, 24 hour CCTV and security patrol, lifts, fire exits, green spaces, walkways and ample parking.
“The apartments will have club house facilities with, among others, a swimming pool, gym, restaurant and light retail shops to serve the residents of the area,” press release states in part.
“The Comer Apartments are only available to former sitting tenants and goodwill holders of both the Naguru and Nakawa estates. In addition to being able to access the development, OPUL, in collaboration with government, will be offering them the apartments at below market prices.”
