Councillors name street after deceased ex-Masaka mayor Gerald Ssemwogerere

Councillors in Masaka Municipal Council have unanimously resolved to name street after deceased Masaka ex-Mayor Gerald Ssemwogerere.
Ssemwogerere, 83, died on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack.
On Friday, the councillors led by Masaka Municipal Mayor, Mr Godfrey Kayemba Afaayo passed a motion to name Elgin Street, one of the busiest streets in Masaka Town, after Ssemwogerere in honour of his contribution.

This was during council session to pay tribute to him at the municipal council hall.
“Mr Ssemwogerere has been a true son of Masaka and this is the reason he chose to invest heavily in this town. Denying him [Ssemwogerere] special recognition like naming a road after him, will be unfair,” he said.
Ssemwogerere served as Masaka mayor between 1992 and 1996.
Speaker after speaker praised Ssemwogerere for contributing to the development of Masaka Town through construction of several shopping malls, filling stations and schools.
Mr Henry Yiga , a councillor representing Nyendo-Ssenyange Division said Ssemwogerere has left an indelible legacy in Masaka asking leaders to borrow a leaf from him.

“Many leaders here have turned selfish which was not the case with the late Ssemwogerere who wanted to develop his area,” he said
Former Njenjeru North MP Ms Sarah Nansubuga, a relative to Ssemwogerere, said he always preached against poverty in their family.
“Ssemwogerere was very rich at heart because he never wanted to see his family members poor. He always made sure that he supports them financially and put them to another level,” she noted.
The deceased had about three buildings on Elgin Street.
Most streets in Masaka were named after some Eropeans who settled in the town before Uganda’s independence while others have names of selected counties of Buganda Kingdom.

Former Katikkiro of Buganda, Mr Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere, a relative to the deceased, tasked Masaka leaders to emulate the deceased and refrain from divisive politics but consider development as first priority.
The deceased was widely considered as one of the richest men in Masaka Sub region, owning a number of assets including shopping malls, rental houses, petrol stations not only in Masaka Town, but also in Kampala, Mukono and outside Uganda.
Ssemwogerere will be laid to rest at his home in Kitenga, a Masaka Town suburb today.
