Court summons church over debt

Kampala. World Evangelical Mission, a born again church, operating as Jubilee Christian Life Church, has been summoned by Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court to file its defence in a case of alleged failure to pay Shs7m borrowed from a lawyer.
The summons of the court followed a civil suit against the church filed by lawyer Michael Aboneka, on May 6.
Also sued is Mr Allan Lugaaju, one of the pastors at the church in Kireka, Nakawa Division, Kampala.

“You are required to file a written statement of defence within 15 days from the date of service of summons on you in the manner prescribed under the Civil Procedure Rules,” reads in part the court summons.
“Should you fail to file a written statement of defence in the suit on or before the date, the plaintiff (Mr Aboneka) may proceed with the suit and judgment may be given in your absence,” the court further states.

Mr Aboneka contends that in May 2017, upon request from the church, he paid Shs7m to vendors who had made supplies to the church.
He says he first advanced to Jubilee Christian Life Church Shs4m on March 18, 2017 and another sum later.
“The money was to be refunded shortly thereafter but since then, the defendants (church and Mr Lugaaju) have declined to cooperate with the plaintiff (Mr Aboneka) in any way,” the petitioner claims.
