Police are hunting for a 16-year-old girl who is also an ex-convict, after she disappeared with a one-year-old baby of her neighbour at Mbalwa Zone in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.

The suspect disappeared with Flavia Kobusingye and she has since switched off her mobile phone, the police said.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said Sharom Muwanguzi, the mother of Kobusingye, left her with Gift Akech as she went to buy grocery at the nearby shop on Monday.

“Muwanguzi returned home, but couldn’t trace Akech or the baby. Akech’s mobile phone was also switched off. The case was reported at our station and we haven’t yet been able to find both the suspect and victim,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Police have appealed to anyone with information leading to tracing and rescuing of the baby to share it with them. A case of child stealing has been opened against Akech.

Detectives’ background check on the suspect indicate that she was prosecuted in a criminal case, convicted and sentence for a year to a child prison at Kampiringisa in Mpigi District.
ASP Owoyesigyire said upon her release, her mother couldn’t stay with her since she was still schooling at the university in Mukono Township.

“She requested members of the church where she was a regular visitor to help her look after the daughter. One church member helped and took over the responsibility of looking after Akech at Mbalwa,” he said.

Police investigations show that she has been receiving calls from her friends that were also released from prison.

Police are contacting some of them to find out her whereabouts.
