Family narrates last hours of killed doctor

What you need to know:

Tormented. Dr Ibra Gwaluka was reportedly tormented by deathly hallucinations.

The four days before Dr Ibra Gwaluka’s murder, the former treasurer of Uganda Medical Association (UMA) in the Busoga sub-region, were weirdly nightmarish.

Dr Gwaluka who was the officer in-charge of Kigandalo Health Centre IV, was allegedly tormented by deathly hallucinations.
Mr Yusuf Naleeba, the deceased’s brother-in-law, says Friday was a normal day for Gwaluka who woke up, had breakfast with the family, went to work at his pine farm, returned home for lunch before heading out to the trading centre for an appointment.

Mr Naleeba is a brother Ms Jalia Namusali, Gwaluka’s widow.
“On his way back after work, he called his wife who had gone for medical treatment at one of the health centres in town. They agreed to meet at Mr Mugolofa’s place. At 8pm they drove home,” a distraught Naleeba recounts.
Mugoloofa is a renowned businessman in Iganga Town.

Mr Naleeba said he did not bother to get details about the couple’s conversation as he was driving to their home in Bulubandi Centre, Iganga Municipality.

He says the couple met at Mugoloofa’s shop in Iganga Town.

But reveals that all hell broke loose when they left the shop and drove home. As they approached the main gate, the Grim Reaper pounced. The hallucinations that had haunted Dr Gwaluka for the past four days were now a reality.

Ms Namusali told her brother that she heard her husband shouting that there was an assassin holding a gun, standing behind one of the flowers on the fence, aiming at their car.
“She (Namusali) jumped out of the car and heard a gunshot. She run for her life as the assassin pursued her. She hid in a nearby toilet. Since Gwaluka was still wailing and calling for help, the gunman turned and came back to finish the mission after failing to trace her whereabouts. He shot him a couple of times. The people in the house saw him opening the door to confirm the death before he sped off,” Mr Naleeba narrated.

Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima confirmed the shooting, saying that they had already commenced their investigations into the matter.
“We have not yet arrested anyone but the officers are on ground trying to investigate the case. We so far do not know the motive behind this act and the killers are still on the run. We request the public to give any clues that can help ease the work of police,” Mr Kayima said.

Gwaluka will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Nsinze Village, Namutumba District.
