Farmers back Cabinet on livestock drugs

Veterinary doctors together with livestock farmers have embraced Cabinet’s decision made to form a separate veterinary drug regulatory authority under the Ministry of Agriculture Animal industry and Fisheries.
Dr John Nuwagaba, the chairperson of Uganda Veterinary Board, said the decision made by Cabinet on Monday would restore the glory of the veterinary profession and propel the livestock sector to greater heights.
Dr Flugy Mukasa, a member of Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA), however, accused the National Drug Authority (NDA) of giving much attention to human drug regulation, leaving out issues concerning veterinary drug regulation.
“The law that we have that regulates animal drugs also regulates human drugs but the biggest challenge was that it was skilled to favour human drug regulation. So issues of veterinary importance were not taken care of under the current law,” Dr Mukasa said yesterday while addressing journalist in Kampala.
Dr David Nahamya, the secretary of NDA, dismissed the claims, saying they have never abandoned veterinary drug regulation, adding that the quality measures on human drugs are as well on veterinary medicine.
Veterinary doctors and livestock farmers called for quick implementation of the decisions.
The National Drug Authority (NDA) is a government statutory body established by the National Drug Policy and Authority Act Cap 206, laws of Uganda (2000 Edition) to regulate human and veterinary medicines and other healthcare products.
NDA’s mandate is to ensure quality, safety and efficacy of human and veterinary medicine and other heathcare products.
