Fire on Friday gutted Katooke landing site in Koome Sub County, Mukono District.

The fire which destroyed more than 202 houses, left at least 900 people homeless. It also destroyed boat engines, fishing nets and domestic property.

Mr Sam Mugisha, the Red Cross Mukono Branch Manager said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire started from a burning charcoal stove which was left in one of the wooden structures.

“As residents tried to contain the situation, it was too late for them since the fire spread so easily through the wooden structures at the landing site. Fortunately, no life was lost,” he said.

Mr Mugisha said that an assessment of the destroyed property was still on-going, adding that the affected residents are struggling to find food and shelter.

This is the second time fire has gutted a landing site in a period of one year in the same district.
