Fishermen flee Lake Albert landing sites over attacks

A section of fishermen who operate along the shores of Lake Albert in Kikuube and Hoima districts have fled their landing sites for fear of being attacked by suspected Congolese militiamen.
The fishermen are operating their businesses from the landing sites of; Kaiso, Kijangi, Kyehoro and Sebigoro among others.
They started fleeing the landing sites on Monday evening following attacks that have left 12 fishermen dead and three others critically injured.
Mr Henry Irumba, the Chairperson LC1 Kaiso landing site in Buseruka Sub County said many residents are now living in fear while others have started fleeing to save their lives. Mr Irumba explained that they cannot rule out the possibility of more attacks.
Mr Kasangaki Ofungi, the Chairperson LC1 Kyehoro landing site in Kabwoya Sub County, Kikuube District said a number of residents had by Monday evening fled the area after receiving information that the militiamen have threatened to attack.
Mr James Bigirwa, a fisherman at Kijangi landing site said that there is need for heightened security on all the landing sites before they can resume their businesses.
