Grief as 2 year old boy dies in septic tank in Budaka

Shock and grief gripped residents of Nalado village in Budaka Town in Budaka District, on Tuesday evening after a 2 -year –old boy died in a septic tank.

Police identified the deceased as Abdul- Rahman Medei, who died on Tuesday evening after he slipped into a septic tank, which was 10 feet deep.

The deceased had reportedly gone to play at the neighborhood with his friends, when the incident happened.

“The boy was playing with his colleagues, but unfortunately he slipped and fell into a deep septic tank, nearby and died instantly,” Mr Moses Mukesi, one of the residents and eye witness, said.

Ms Hamida Nantume, the mother to the deceased, who is still coming to terms with the untimely death of her son said he had gone to play as usual but little did she know that he would never return.

“I knew he would come back and I was waiting, only to be informed by my neighbour that he had drowned in septic tank and died,” she said.

The Deputy Criminal investigation officer, Budaka Central Police Station, Mr Moses Bavekuno, confirmed the incident, and said that the body had been handed over to the parents and relatives for burial.

Mr Bavekuno said the owner of the septic tank, Ms Teddy Samali, a primary teacher, has already made statement at police regarding the incident.

The area LC111 chairperson, Mr Rogers Mukose, described the incident as regrettable and called for prevention measures.

“There is need for the owners of abandoned pits or septic tanks to fence them off to prevent such incidents in future,” he said.
