Police have arrested two people after a gang of suspected robbers riding at least six boda boda motorcycles pounced on a businessman, beat him up before robbing Shs300m.

The incident happened at Wilson Road near Arua Park at around 11:30am on Tuesday. The victim, Hassan Maalim, a Kenyan national and manager of Mid-West Forex Bureau, was carrying money in a car from DTB Bank on Kampala Road to Equity Bank around Arua Park when he was attacked.

The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, said the suspects (a boda boda cyclist and the victim’s driver) are being held in custody to help police with further investigations.
“The whole incident was captured on our Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras."

“The faces of the suspects and the number plates of the motorcycles are being analysed.......,” Mr Onyango said.
This is the fourth incident police are investigating concerning attacks on foreigners in a space of one month.

Mr Maalim said he got a boda boda cyclist near his premises and dropped him off at DTB Bank.
It is reported that he later withdrew the money and called Asuman Baluku, a driver, who picked him up.
“As they were driving on Wilson Road, they were knocked by a motorcycle and when they stopped, a gang of boda boda motorcycle riders rained punches on Mr Maalim and grabbed the bag that had cash. They then jumped on their motorcycles and fled,” Mr Onyango said.
Police said an analysis of the CCTV footage shows that the cyclists had been deployed in the area to carry out the robbery.

Mr Onyango said they have always warned business community not to carry large sums of money without police or private security escorts, something that many business people ignore.
