Pt Jimmy Masaaba, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) soldier attached to Kaabong Brigade who has been on run after shooting dead a civilian in Kaabong District, has been put out of action by his colleagues.

Masaaba reportedly shot dead, Joseph Nyerere, a foreman at the Chinese Construction Camp in Kaabong over the weekend and fled with the firearm.

He was later sighted at Uzake Village in Morungole Sub County, Kaabong District, prompting the brigade commander to send for his arrest on Monday morning.

But the mission landed the soldiers in a nasty accident that claimed four of them on spot, injuring three others.

Police preliminary findings indicate that the accident happened when the driver of the UPDF Land Cruiser registration number DO3DF108 got obstructed by goats on the road causing him to lose control and the vehicle rammed into a beer depot in Kaabong Town Council. The accident occurred at around 7.00am.

The accident victims were airlifted to Bombo Military Hospital in Luweero District for further management.

However, Maj Telesphor Turyamumanya, the 3rd Division Spokesman, said the mission to hunt for Masaaba continued until he was cornered at Lolelia Detach in Kaabong on Tuesday afternoon.

He explained that after realizing that he had been surrounded by soldiers, Masaaba reportedly started shooting at them, prompting a retaliation that killed him.

“Our soldiers kept tracking Masaaba until he felt he had nowhere to go. Instead of surrendering, he attempted to prevent the arrest by shooting at that soldiers who retaliated by shooting back at him, thus killing him,” Maj Turyamumanya said.

He revealed that the driver, who caused the accident later surrendered himself to his superiors, having ran away after an accident. He said that the two injured soldiers and a civilian are not in bad condition.
