The Kasese Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Milton Odongo, has warned residents involved in reported rebel recruitment of severe action.

“I want to tell you that if you do not desist from rebellion activities in Kasese, we are ready to put you out of action since we have already known your recruitment bases,” Mr Odongo told residents of Karambi Sub-county last week.

He said some rebel recruitment had allegedly been carried out in Kanyampara and Nkoko villages in Munkunyu and Karusandara sub-counties and in Rwimi, Kabarole District.

The residents told the RDC that although some of the indigenous people from the Rwenzori region joined the Allied Democratic Forces, the largest number of the rebels were people from other regions.
The residents urged government to intensify community sensitisation against rebellion.

Training hub
Mr Odongo, who chairs the district security committee, said many times the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had become a training hub for insurgents who want to fight the government.

“The government is ready to fight any enemy who seeks to destabilise the country,” Mr Odongo said. He cautioned residents against fighting a legitimate government.

“I want to warn you that if you are still planning to join rebellion better resign now or else you make a will. We shall kill all of you who will dare attack this country,” the RDC said.

Mr Odongo advised the people to instead engage in business and agricultural production.

The 2nd Division army spokesperson, Lt. Ninsiima Rwemijuma, however, said there were no rebel activities in the Rwenzori region.

“It is true remnants could be living with us but no rebel activity is being done in western part of the country; we are on the ground monitoring their movements in DRC,” Lt. Ninsiima said on phone.
