Kigezi High School student killed in clashes with Nyabikoni SS, 29 arrested

KABALE-- Police in Kabale District in western Uganda are investigating a case in which a student of Kigezi High School died on Sunday evening after he was hit by a stone during clashes with students of the neighbouring Nyabikoni Secondary School.
The Kigezi High School deputy head teacher, Ms Peninah Ssejabi identified the deceased as Rogers Bakashaba alias Plus Two from senior five. She said she was not aware of the cause of the clashes.
The Kabale District Police Commander Mr Brian Ampaire said one unidentified student was admitted to Kabale regional referral hospital after he was seriously injured while about 29 others from Kigezi high school have been arrested for attacking another school.
Mr Ampaire said the incident happened in Nyabikoni cell, Nyabikoni ward in Kabale municipality.
“The incident happened at around 5pm when students from Kigezi High School attacked students of the neighbouring Nyabikoni Secondary School for reasons not yet established. During the attack the some students of Nyabikoni Secondary School pelted stones and one hit the
head of one of the students from Kigezi High School. He died on spot, he said.

Police took Bakashaba’s body to Kabale regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
The Kabale Resident District Commissioner Mr Darius Nandinda said that the police have deployed heavily at the two schools to calm the situation.
“We are planning to hold a stakeholders meeting on Monday (today) to decide on
the next course of action,” Mr Nandinda said.
He wondered how students from Kigezi High School walked for about one kilometer from their school with sticks and stones to attack a neighboring school without the school administration including the teacher on duty noticing.
The head teacher for Nyabikoni Secondary School Mr Apollo Barigye said situation at his school normalized after the police intervened.
“I want to thank the police for the timely intervention because they helped to calm down and save the situation,” Mr Barigye said.
