Kumi Diocese gets new bishop

KUMI- Rev Charles Oode Okunya is the new Bishop of Kumi Diocese under Church of Uganda.

Church of Uganda provincial secretary, Rev Canon Captain William Oneng confirmed to Daily Monitor the election of the Rev Okunya on Thursday.

The election was conducted by the House of Bishops at Namirembe Guest House, in Kampala.

Rev Okunya will replace the retiring bishop Thomas Edison Irigei.

Mr Oneng said the newly-elected bishop will be consecrated and enthroned on December 29, 2019 at St. Philip’s Cathedral, Ngora.

 He said Rev Okunya will replace the Rt. Rev Irigei, who will retire at the end of 2019 when he clocks the the Church’s mandatory retirement age of 65.

Who is Rev Okunya?

Rev Okunya was born on  November, 23, 1970 in Kumi to Elimelech and Ruth Oode.

He holds a Master of Management Studiesfrom the Uganda Management Institute, and a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University.

 He originally trained as a teacher and holds a Diploma in Secondary Education from the National Teachers' College, Ngetta.

Rev Okunya was ordained a deacon in 2006 and a priest in 2007.

 He worked as the principal of Bishop Tomusange Theological College, lectured at Kumi University, served as a school chaplain and teacher, worked as the Diocesan Mission Coordinator as well as a parish priest.

 He is married to Christine Kedi.
