Kyenjojo killings were a revenge act, say police

Kampala. Police have said last week’s murder of five children in Kyenjojo District was an act of revenge.
The murder happened last Thursday at around 1am when the suspects broke the door and entered the house of local businessman Joseph Tumwebaze.
The assailants locked a relative, Mr Gerald Akampa, in his room and searched for Mr Tumwebaze but he was not at home at the time. They then turned on his five children and killed them.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the five suspects in custody have confessed to the crime, saying they killed the children because their father, Tumwebaze, their original target, was not in the house. “These suspects have confirmed that they revenged for their brother who was killed by Tumwebaze’s brother in 2012. They accuse Tumwebaze of helping his brother Godfrey Ndyanabo to get out of prison,” Mr Enanga said.
Police said their investigations show that Mr Tumwebaze had held meetings with the family whose relative had been killed by Mr Ndyanabo and compensated them with Shs4m.
Mr Enanga said some of the relatives agreed to bury the hatchet after receiving the compensation but two of the deceased’s brothers vowed to revenge on Mr Ndyanabo or Mr Tumwebaze who had helped him to get out of prison.

“By yesterday [Sunday], suspects were leading our officers to different places where they had hidden the machetes they used to kill the children. Our detectives are gathering all vital information and exhibits,” Mr Enanga said.
Police are holding five suspects, including one who was found in Ntinda, a Kampala suburb.
“We have established the identity of the other two suspects on the run and they include a local councillor in whose home the plot was hatched and one who instigated the murder. We are tracking them down,” Mr Enanga said.
