Luweero bishops decry unending corruption, brutality

Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana-Luweero Diocese

Luweero- The Anglican and Catholic bishops of Luweero and Kasana-Luweero Diocese have rallied Christians against the rising corruption and brutality that are crippling service delivery.

Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, while delivering his Easter Sermon at the cathedral on Sunday, said corruption is not only in public places and government offices but the entire society is now eaten up with every single service now tagged on unsolicited payments before the service is delivered.

“The corruption cancer is at its peak in society. While we expect government officials to offer services as required, soliciting of bribes for the same service is the order of the day. One will not offer the right service for which he is paid salary unless he has been given something. This is very unfortunate and calls for collective effort to have the vice eliminated,” Bishop Ssemogerere said.

Bishop Elidard Nsubuga Kironde of Luweero Anglican Diocese decried the rising cases of brutality and criminal acts orchestrated by individuals who take drugs.

“We have our youth who now take drugs as their daily menu. When they commit these acts, the authorities are on the watch and little has been done to arrest the situation,” Bishop Nsubuga said.

Luweero District chairperson Ronald Ndawula while addressing Christians at Kasana Cathedral, urged the residents to join the crusade against environmental degradation which partly explains why Luweero, among other parts of Uganda, has continued to experience a mild weather condition.

“It is unfortunate that up to now we have no rain. We are likely to go through a harsh season because of the prolonged drought,” Mr Ndawula said.
