Magara is new Makerere council chairperson

Kampala. Makerere University yesterday elected Ms Lorna Magara as the new council chairperson. Ms Magara defeated Dr Stephen Kagoda, the former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The University Council is the supreme governing body of the university.
Ms Magara, who is the principal of Vine International Christian Academy replaces Eng Charles Wana-Etyem who led the council for the last eight years.
The new council members elected their leaders during their first meeting at the university’s main building amid tight security after lecturers threatened to strike. University secretary Charles Barugahare confirmed Ms Magara’s victory. She emerged the best with 11 votes out of 17 votes. One person abstained.

Mr Dan Kidega, the former speaker of East African General Assembly will deputise Magara after all the 18 members voted for him.
Daily Monitor understands that the new council members elected three people to represent the public on council including, Mr Bruce Kabaasa who was the chairperson appointments board, MP Thomas Tayeebwa who was representing the government on the old council and Mr Kidega. After the re-election of the two men they wanted out of the council, the chairperson of Makerere university academic staff association, Mr Deus Kamunyu said he was consulting other members to come up with a way forward on the matter.

“We were very clear that if those two officials bounce back on the new council, we are going to lay down our tools. I have received official information that those two have bounced back,” Mr Kamunyu said.
The University Council formulates policies on behalf of government that guide the management of the university to oversee their implementation.
The tenure of the outgoing council expired on Wednesday.
