Makerere University final year student commits suicide over debt

Ashraf Nsubuga, a fourth year student of Makerere University has committed suicide inside his room at White House, an extension of Nsibirwa Hall at Makerere University.
The deceased, who is about 22 years old and a student in the university’s college of health sciences on government sponsorship was pursuing a Bachelor of Sceinces in Medical Radiology.
Kampala metropolitan spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire says the incident occurred at about 12:15pm on Sunday.
“Nsubuga’s body was found hanging on a rope tied on the door in his room. Teams from Wandegeya and Makerere police stations visited the scene and conveyed the body to the Mulago Hospital mortuary for post-mortem,” he said in a statement.
Owoyesigire says police is investigating the motive behind the suicide and information on ground is that the deceased has been in debt.
“May be the cause is foiled business or debt collectors’ demands or pressure,” Oweyesigire says.
Makerere University guild president Julius Kateregga says the deceased’s roommate had gone to church for prayers when the incident occurred.
“By the time he got back he found the door locked. He tried to peep through the window and saw someone hanging,” Kateregga says.
A case has been opened at Makerere Police under the file SD 08/29/2018
Information on ground is that a number of University students have resorted to betting and gambling. Some students allege that he was involved in online network marketting, where he lost close to Shs18 million to a ponzi scheme.
