Man commits suicide after parents opposed his intimacy with ‘an old woman’

OYAM- A 23-year-old man has committed suicide after his parents reportedly blocked his relationship with a 29-year-old woman "because she was too old" to become a wife of their son.

Justine Okello hanged himself using a rope inside his hut on Wednesday night and the body was discovered on Thursday morning.

According to Mr Peter Omara, the chairperson of Myene Trading Centre Local Council I, in Myene sub-county, Oyam District, Okello had a conflict with his parents after he started cohabiting with the woman.

“His parents got annoyed and they chased her away two weeks ago,” Mr Omara told said.

Mr Omara said Okello defied his parents and brought the woman back to his house.

The following day, according to Mr Omara, the parents locked Okello’s house and told the woman to “leave their son alone.”

Omara said that for the past week, Okello had been staying alone in the house where he hanged himself.

Myene Sub-county chairman, Mr James Ogwal blamed the parents for causing the death of their son.

“They only concentrated on the age difference between the two and forgot that the two were already deeply in love and wanted to settle down as husband and wife,” Mr Ogwal said.

He said it’s absurd that some people in Lango region still have primitive beliefs that a woman should not be older than her husband or lover.

Oyam District Police Commander, Mr Victor Sassi Kule said his officers in the area, have not briefed him about the incident.
