Man convicted for defiling 7-year-old, another arrested for defiling 15-year-old

A 22-year-old taxi driver has been arrested in Rukungiri District on charges of defiling a 15-year-old girl just hours after High Court in Kampala convicted a 20-year-old man for defiling a seven-year-old neighbour.
Mike Katongole was on Tuesday found guilty of defiling his neighbor’s daughter whose identity we cannot reveal because she’s a minor.
High Court Judge Wilson Kwesiga observed that all the three ingredients of aggravated defilement (victim was under 14 years of age, sexual act and participation of the accused) were proved beyond reasonable doubt.
"The best evidence is that of the victim because these offenses are usually committed in secrecy. In this case, the girl was consistent and firm even when being cross examined by the defence lawyer," the judge said.
According to court records, Katongole on the March 26, 2017 at Nansana East II zone, Nansana municipality in the Wakiso District performed a sexual act with a minor.
The girl told court that on the fateful day, at around 7pm, the accused invited her into his fenced residence and gave her Shs 300 to go and buy for him two sticks of cigarettes which she did.
When the minor brought the cigarettes, Katongole invited her into his room which he closed before he forced her onto his bed and defiled her.
Relatedly, police in Rukungiri District are holding a taxi driver on allegations of defiling a 15-years-old girl.
Rukungiri District Police commander, Moses Nanoka, told this reporter that Denis Nuwagaba, a resident of Rushaya cell, Bwambara parish Bwambara Sub County was on Tuesday picked from his friend’s house where he had been hiding since September 20, 2019 when he committed the offence.
Nuwagaba is currently detained at Rukungiri police station as investigations continue.
However, the victim’s mother said that on the fateful day, she waited for her daughter to return home from the garden in vain.
“She returned several hour late crying and bleeding through her reproductive organs,” her mother narrated.
