Man detained over Shs300,000 debt dies in police cell

A 37-year-old man who had been detained at Magwa Police Post in Jinja Central Division in Jinja District has been found dead, a day after his arrest.
The body of Musa Gubindi, a resident of Mailo Mbili in Mpummude-Kimaka Division was found hanging in a police cell with authorities describing it as suicide.

Police said he used a loose drawstring from his trouser to hang himself.
Mr Sayid Kisadha, a boda boda rider in Jinja town said Gubindi was arrested after he failed to clear the Shs300, 000 loan he had acquired from a microfinance.
“He was invited by the colleagues to clear the debt he acquired at Pride Micro-finance but he was instead arrested and detained at police. We went at police on Friday morning to follow up the case but unfortunately, we found him dead,’’ he said.
Mr Kisadha added that Gubindi, a fellow cyclist got an accident at Kakira Town Council and broke his right leg which prompted the owner of the motorcycle to take it away from him.
He had reportedly stopped working and could not meet his loan obligations.

The Magwa village chairperson Mr Abubaker Kintu said they were still in shock over their colleague’s death.
“It has never happened in our area. I appeal to everybody that if you have a problem, committing suicide is not a solution,’’ he said.

“He was arrested for obtaining money by false pretence but unfortunately, he has been found dead in the police cell. We have taken the body to Jinja Hospital mortuary as investigations are ongoing, ‘’ she said
