Man kills son over meat

Manafwa- Police in Manafwa District have arrested a 43-year-old man over killing his son.

The suspect, Mr Anthony Namisiko is a resident of Buwamwibi Village, Maefe Parish in Maefe Sub-county.

It is alleged that he strangled his eight-year-old on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was a pupil of Maefe Primary School and his mother, Joan Namono, was reportedly not at home when the incident happened.

The District Police Commander, Mr Denis Kamugisha, confirmed the arrest.
Mr Kamugisha said the suspect, who is currently detained at Manafwa Central Police station, will be charged with murder after the investigations are complete.

Parents cautioned
He, however, cautioned parents against torturing their children, adding that it is a crime.

Mr Ahamada Washaki, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), who visited the scene, said the suspect could have committed the offence under the influence of alcohol.

Mr Washaki said they have launched an operation to crack down on early drinking and gambling.

He said they will organise meetings to sensitise people about the dangers of domestic violence.

“People nolonger work but instead wake up early morning to head to drinking joints and gambling centres, which has rendered most of them unproductive, poor and desperate,” he said.

Witnesses
Ms Everline Sellah, one of the neighbours, said on the fateful day, when the suspect returned home from a drinking spree and asked for his meat, he got angry after his son told him that he had eaten the meat.

“I heard when the son told him that he had eaten it and I knew it would annoy him but I did not expect that he would kill him because of meat,” she said.

Ms Sellah explained that after a few minutes, they heard the suspect making alarms that he had killed his own son.

Mr Juma Zubairi, the LC3 chairperson for Maefe Sub-county in Manafwa District, said cases of men fighting for food in their families are rampant.

“When men buy meat, they expect to come back home to have it and if they do not, they beat up their women and children,” he said.
