Buganda Road court has denied bail to Moses Waswa, 31, who is facing one count of manufacturing and sale of non-conforming mattresses contrary to sections of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards Act as amended 2013.
Upon denying the charge, the accused applied for bail and presented three sureties as guarantee for one to be granted bail, but the presiding magistrate Ms Marion Mangeni denied him bail on grounds that the LC1 letters the sureties presented were not corresponding with their places of residence they mentioned before court.
“For bail to be granted, the sureties need to be truthful, two of the sureties claimed to be residents of Mpererwe in Wakiso, however, their LC1 letters are from Buganda Road. The accused is hereby denied bail,” Ms Mangeni said.
The defects in the sureties’ documents were brought to court’s attention by the prosecutor Ms Caroline Akugizibwe.
Prosecution contends that Waswa and others still at large on February 9, 2019 at Kawempe–Tula a Kampala suburb, being the Managing Director of Rio Form (U) Limited and the producer of Rio Form Mattress Brand, manufactured for sale 335 pieces of Rio Form Mattresses which do not conform to the required specifications of flexible polyurethane foams under US 202:2015-Part 2.
Court adjourned the matter to October 30, for hearing.
