Man shot dead in Nansana

Witnesses yesterday accused Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel of shooting dead an unidentified man in Nansana Municipality.

The man was killed at about 8pm at Masitowa Stage on Kampala-Hoima road.

Witness told Daily Monitor last evening that police, working with LDUs, were trying to disperse a crowd of People Power supporters who had gathered to cheer the convoy of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine.

Mr Kyagulanyi and his supporters were returning from Kiboga District for the burial of Ritah Nabukenya, a People Power supporter, who died on Monday in a motor crash.

Nabukenya was allegedly knocked dead in Nakawa, a Kampala suburb, sparking off speculation about circumstances of her death.

Another witness told Daily Monitor that after the burial, Bobi Wine’s convoy was trailed by security.

Chaos erupts
“When we reached Kateera Trading Centre, people gathered to wave at Bobi Wine. We continued to Bukomeero and Busunju without incident until Nansana when someone was shot at 8pm,” the witness said.

Another person said when the convoy reached Nansana, police randomly fired bullets and that was when a young man in jeans and a Uganda Cranes jersey was shot dead near Bank of Africa, opposite Tuskys Supermarket.

The body, soaked in blood, was then picked up by a police patrol vehicle and driven off to an unknown destination.

Witnesses said the crowd at the scene pelted police with stones, forcing the Force to fire teargas and bullets to disperse the crowd.

By press time last evening, the body had not been delivered to the City Mortuary for postmortem.

Police in a brief statement on their official social media platforms, said they are still investigating the motive of the shooting.

"Police in Nasana has registered an incident of murder by shooting around Masitowa, Nansana. The motive of the shooting is not yet established. However, the body of the victim has been taken to city mortuary Mulago," the statement read in part.

In the statement, Police also said one of their officers was injured in a hit and run accident around the same area.

However, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, last evening promised to issue a detailed statement today explaining what happened in Nansana Municipality.
