Minister cautions government universities on strikes

Gulu. The Minister for Education and Sports, Ms Janet Museveni, has raised complaints over numerous strikes in public universities saying they cripple the enrollment of foreign students in the country.
Ms Museveni said strikes are very disruptive of the socio-economic life and smooth delivery of academic programmes and hence should be resolved.
“Strikes put unnecessary pressure on all stakeholders in the post-strike period, students, parents, staff and the university management all do suffer greatly to compensate for the time lost,” the minister said in her speech read on her behalf by the minister for Primary Healthcare, Ms Joyce Moriku Kaducu, during Gulu University’s 14th graduation ceremony on Saturday.
Ms Museveni noted that as part of efforts to curb the “unnecessary” strikes, the government through Ministry of Finance has again this financial year earmarked funds to further enhance the salaries of staff in all public universities.
She, however, cautioned the staff at public universities to be more disciplined and be ethically committed to their work to realise value for money.
