Police have named three of the seven people killed in an accident that occurred on Monday night at Walumbe, Buwenge Rural Sub-county in Jinja District along the Jinja-Kamuli Highway.
The Division Police Commander in-charge of Jinja North, Mr Henry Mugalula, said the accident, involving two sugarcane trucks, was as a result of overloading and failure by both trucks to stop.

“The accident occurred when a truck carrying sugarcane failed to climb a hill at Walumbe junction and rolled back before overturning. Residents were trying to clear the sugarcane truck registration number UAK 344V off the road before another lorry registration number UAK 996Z, also loaded with sugarcane, rammed into them," he said.
Mr Mugalula identified some of the victims as Isma Mulema, a Political Assistant to Lands Minister, Isaac Musumba, Ivan Mbade and Waiswa Walujo among others.

“Many others were injured and are admitted in different hospitals and health centres, while some were taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital," Mr Mugalula said.

He added that other victims couldn't be identified because their heads were smashed.

The former District Councillor for Buwenge Town Council, Mr Peter Kamwami, urged police to ensure that the drivers, who remain at large, are arrested and brought to book.
